Windows users can download the beta version of Scrivener 3. Download Scrivener and enjoy it on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. But, even though they don’t it’s still the best writing software. Read reviews, compare customer ratings, see screenshots, and learn more about Scrivener. I wish they put as much effort into it as they do the Mac version. I can’t wait for Scrivener 3 for Windows! a friend using Scrivener 1. I asked a couple of friends who have the Windows version for their opinions and they said, A quick look at it, and it’s a scaled-back version of Scrivener that would be suitable for on-the-go writing. I have the iOS version but I never use my iPad so I’m not really comfortable reviewing it. This review is going to focus on the Mac version of Scrivener because it’s what I use. I like how it helps me set project and chapter targets.

Scrivener won’t tell you how to write-it simply provides everything you need to start writing and keep writing. Scrivener is the go-to app for writers of all kinds, used every day by best-selling novelists, screenwriters, non-fiction writers, students, academics, lawyers, journalists, translators and more. I don’t know why I didn’t start with Scrivener. When I first started Herded Words, I wrote a handful of blog posts in Microsoft Word and a couple in Apple Pages. Honestly, once you get used to Scrivener the idea of using something else is baffling. If I’d had Scrivener as a student, I’d have written essays, assignments, projects, and my thesis in it. I use Scrivener for all my writing needs. Tired of endless scrolling through Microsoft Word to find something? Having to open 1,934 different files in 42 different programs? I can sync my chapter with my phone, then take it with me without have to switch between different apps and documents. Scrivener's new iOS app makes this process seamless. If any notes came to me during this process, I would take them down using Evernote, or another app, and then have to laboriously message them or copy and paste them when I came back to my computer. Often when I'm stuck on a chapter, I like to take a walk to clear my head and brainstorm solutions. It can be as simple or as complex as you want. It is extremely customizable allowing you to insert and utilize whatever you need.

This powerful tool compiles everything into an organized flow of documents. So if you need to write five more chapters of at least 1,000 words, Scrivener lets you input each goal and see how close you are to achieving them at a glance. One of the most impressive features of Scrivener 2 and 3 is the binder feature. Scrivener also allows you to create word count goals for each section. I've had people ask me whether I create separate Word documents for each chapter, and now I say, “Not anymore!” Scrivener lets me keep all my chapters separated but easily accessible, which is convenient when working on a big project.

I've worked on five book projects with Scrivener, and I've been impressed with how much easier it is to stay organized, especially between chapters and sub-chapters. Now I have one document to capture all my ideas in, whether they're pictures, snippets of text, links to articles, or quotes from a novel. I had piles of napkins and scraps of paper all over the house. I had dozens of Word documents strewn around on my computer with snippets of text. In the past, I had a hard time capturing all those ideas into one, organized place. Nearly every day I read something interesting pertaining to the story, or get a phrase to write down on a napkin, or see a picture on Pinterest that reminds me of one of my characters.
